Remembrance Events

Unity is the theme for the Charleston Southern MLK event. Martin Luther King, with his commitment to end racial segregation and discrimination through nonviolent means, would agree with such a theme. Our school will be hosting a Candle Light Vigil around the Reflection Pond on Monday, January 16 from 5-5:45 pm to honor our fallen warrior for Christ. Please stop by to pay your respects to his memory and unite with others of like minds who desire to see unity of all kinds.

The Annual MLK Holiday Parade will also be on Monday Jan. 16th. It begins at 11am in front of Burke High School. It will run from Fishburne Street to Ashley Avenue then to Sumter Street and King Street and ends at Marion Square.

Another way to pay tribute is to donate to an MLK book drive. There is a drop box located outside of the campus bookstore. Needed are books suitable for 5th-9th grade students.

This is a federal holiday.  All public offices will be closed. All banks, post offices and public school will also be closed in remembrance.

Charleston Southern will be holding classes and all offices will be open.

Charleston Southern packing Operation Christmas Child Shoebox

The Charleston Southern University family will host a Packing Party for Operation Christmas Child Thursday, Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. in the dining hall and Charleston Room of the Strom Thurmond Center during Elevate, the University’s weekly campus worship experience.

Because the national collection week was the third week in November, Charleston Southern’s Dec. 1 Packing Party is the Charleston community’s last chance to participate in this year’s gift-giving project for children around the world.

The public has also been invited to the Packing Party.

“CSU’s students are committed to extending God’s Love to children who face significant challenges daily,” said Dr. Rick Brewer, vice president for student affairs and athletics. “One of the numerous opportunities our students participate in annually is Operation Christmas Child, a strategic ministry providing assistance to children worldwide. CSU’s students are passionate about transformational leadership opportunities such as Operation Christmas Child given the specific, strategic nature of this global ministry outreach.”

Operation Christmas Child, a worldwide Samaritan’s Purse project, plans to take 8 million shoe boxes to children in 100 countries this Christmas.
