Remembrance Events

Posted by on Jan 12, 2012 in Events | 0 comments

Unity is the theme for the Charleston Southern MLK event. Martin Luther King, with his commitment to end racial segregation and discrimination through nonviolent means, would agree with such a theme. Our school will be hosting a Candle Light Vigil around the Reflection Pond on Monday, January 16 from 5-5:45 pm to honor our fallen warrior for Christ. Please stop by to pay your respects to his memory and unite with others of like minds who desire to see unity of all kinds.

The Annual MLK Holiday Parade will also be on Monday Jan. 16th. It begins at 11am in front of Burke High School. It will run from Fishburne Street to Ashley Avenue then to Sumter Street and King Street and ends at Marion Square.

Another way to pay tribute is to donate to an MLK book drive. There is a drop box located outside of the campus bookstore. Needed are books suitable for 5th-9th grade students.

This is a federal holiday.  All public offices will be closed. All banks, post offices and public school will also be closed in remembrance.

Charleston Southern will be holding classes and all offices will be open.

Charleston Southern packing Operation Christmas Child Shoebox

Posted by on Nov 21, 2011 in Events | 0 comments

The Charleston Southern University family will host a Packing Party for Operation Christmas Child Thursday, Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. in the dining hall and Charleston Room of the Strom Thurmond Center during Elevate, the University’s weekly campus worship experience.

Because the national collection week was the third week in November, Charleston Southern’s Dec. 1 Packing Party is the Charleston community’s last chance to participate in this year’s gift-giving project for children around the world.

The public has also been invited to the Packing Party.

“CSU’s students are committed to extending God’s Love to children who face significant challenges daily,” said Dr. Rick Brewer, vice president for student affairs and athletics. “One of the numerous opportunities our students participate in annually is Operation Christmas Child, a strategic ministry providing assistance to children worldwide. CSU’s students are passionate about transformational leadership opportunities such as Operation Christmas Child given the specific, strategic nature of this global ministry outreach.”

Operation Christmas Child, a worldwide Samaritan’s Purse project, plans to take 8 million shoe boxes to children in 100 countries this Christmas.

For more information about gift suggestions for children between the ages of 2 and 14, visit samaritanspurse.org/occ.

Top 10 Cheap Things to Do in Charleston

Posted by on Nov 17, 2011 in Events | 2 comments

10. Check the Paper

-           Always check the local newspaper to hear about different events going on around town, such as free concerts, festivals and shows. This is a great way to go out and have a good time without having to spend too much money.

9. Restaurants that offer CSU discounts

-           There are many restaurants in the area that offer small discounts to CSU students. Atlanta Bread Company gives a $2 discount on every purchase. Brusters offers a 10 percent discount. Every Tuesday is CSU Day at Jersey Mike’s and they offer a meal for $7 plus tax to all CSU students. Don’t forget your student ID to prove you’re a student here at CSU if the restaurants happen to ask.

 8. Geocaching

-           Geocaching is a glorified scavenger hunt. You go online to their website (http://www.geocaching.com) and find coordinates to where the item is located, and then you go find it. It could be inside a small pill bottle or inside a large box. It doesn’t cost anything to take part and can turn into quite an adventure depending on your level of difficulty. And it’s been said there are some geocaches right here on our campus.

 7. North Charleston Dream Center

-           Planted by Charleston’s own Seacoast Church, the North Charleston Dream Center is a place where you can go volunteer your time in a fun environment. You can work with kids, work in the clothes closet or in the food bank. It’s an experience you’re not likely to forget and the volunteer coordinators are always welcoming. The dream center is at 5505 North Rhett Avenue, North Charleston, SC. Or you can call in advance at 843-225-1115. Just remember, it feels good to do good. Here is their website.

6. Wannamaker Park

-           Wannamaker Park is right down the street from campus and costs $1 per person to enter. There are bike trails, a pond to fish in and large fields to play some Frisbee or touch football. Click here for more information.

 5. Monday Night Football Bingo at Wild Wing

-           If you love watching football and winning prizes, then Monday Night Football Bingo is for you. Every Monday night at the Wild Wing on Rivers Avenue, they hold a game of football bingo. It doesn’t cost anything to play, unless you order food or a drink other than water. But if you get bingo and then win the infamous flick contest at halftime or after the game, you are awarded a $25 gift certificate to use on your next visit. So you show up, watch some football and might just win $25.

 4. Applebee’s Half Price Appetizers

-           Every night after 10 o’clock, all Applebee’s restaurants offer their appetizer menu at half price. Go with friends and enjoy the atmosphere, all for half of the usual price.

 3. Oakbrook Theater/Northwood Stadium Cinemas

-           There are two theaters in the area that offer cheaper prices than most theaters. Oakbrook Theater offers $3 tickets during the week and $5-6 on the weekend. It is located at 4488 Ladson Road, Summerville. Also, Northwood Stadium Cinemas offers cheaper tickets. Not as cheap as Oakbrook however, charging $5 Monday through Thursday, and $8 Friday through Sunday. This theater can be found at 2181 Northwoods Boulevard, North Charleston.

 2. Beach

-           You can never go wrong with making a trip out to the Edge of America. Folly Beach, Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island are great places to go relax, hang out and soak up the sun. The only fee would be for parking, but there are plenty of places to park for free. Just remember, if you park on the street, make sure you are facing the way of traffic and have all four tires off of the concrete, or you may be ticketed.

 1. Downtown

-           Downtown Charleston is full of things to do, and the only thing you may have to pay for is parking. You could go relax in the lobby of topnotch hotels, such as the Francis Marion and  Charleston Place. You can also walk around by the Battery or the Pineapple Fountain, and may just be lucky enough to spot a dolphin in the water.

Enjoy Charleston!! Let us know of other great economically friendly Charleston attractions. If you take some pics at these places or others feel free to send them our way and we will post your good time pics from time to time.  buconline@csuniv.edu

CSU Players Present Twelve Angry Jurors showing Oct. 20-22

Posted by on Oct 20, 2011 in Events | 0 comments

Some day in your future, you just may walk to your mailbox on a perfectly average day and retrieve the mail.  Upon flipping through bills and catalogues, your eyes may greet an envelope that is more somber in appearance.  Your heart may sink as you skim down the page; you have been summoned for jury duty.

You might be upset about the inconvenience this will cause in your life, and the characters of CSU’s theater production, Twelve Angry Jurors, know how you feel.
Twelve Angry Jurors, directed by Thomas Keating, is the story of 12 very different individuals drawn together to decide the fate of a boy accused of killing his father.  After a grueling trial, the ornery group of mismatched jurors is ready to return to their everyday life. “Guilty!” they declare.
However, one man stands against the group.  With a shadow of a doubt in his mind, he refuses to condemn a man to death as a matter of convenience.  Will the man stand true to his convictions? Or will he break under the pressure of his fellow jurors, giving a unanimously guilty verdict? A man’s life hangs on the answer to this question.
Answers to these questions can be found on Oct. 20 -22 in Lightsey Chapel at 7:30 p.m.  Don’t miss the opportunity to support your fellow students and the CSU Players as you enjoy a night of intrigue, suspense and drama.
Free for students, faculty and staff with a CSU I.D. Tickets for the general public are $7 at the door.

Zumba’s choreography incorporates hip-hop, samba, salsa, mambo, martial arts, belly dance moves and much more to help you break a sweat and drop some calories!! The CSU Zumba class offered weekly by the Campus Recreation department has become a big hit.
